Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Lethbridge, Alberta -- It will be a rematch of last year's Western Hockey League opening round playoff series Friday night when the Brandon Wheat Kings kick off a busy 3-game in three night road trip in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes.
Friday's game is the second of a 5-game road trip for the Wheat Kings, who enter the weekend with a record of 14-9-1-1, good for 30 points and fourth place in the WHL's Eastern Division. Brandon collected five of a possible six points (2-0-0-1) last week to move to within six points of the front running Saskatoon Blades.
As for the Hurricanes, who defeated Brandon four games to two in their best of 7 opening round playoff series last spring en route to an Eastern Conference Title, they enter the weekend with a .500 record (12-12-0-1) and sit in fifth place in the Central Division - 20 points behind the League leading Calgary Hitmen.
Brandon hopes to have 18-year old defenceman Colby Robak in the lineup sometime this weekend. A second round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, Robak has missed the past four games.
"It was very hard for me to watch those couple of games, it makes you want to get our there," Robak told James Shewaga of the Brandon Sun on Wednesday. "We've got a big weekend ahead of us and we need to come out with as many points as possible."
Robak is Brandon's top scoring defenceman with six goals and 14 points in nineteen games. As well, he has registered an impressive +8 plus/minus rating.
Following Friday's game, Robak and the Wheat Kings will travel to Medicine Hat for a game against the Tigers on Saturday night before closing out the weekend Sunday in Calgary against the Hitmen.
"It's a tough weekend," Brandon coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon told the Brandon Sun this week. "Any time you play three in three nights, I think that brings its own challenges with it. And then the three buildings that we are going into all have good teams."
While Calgary sits atop the WHL with an impressive 22-4-1-0 record, the Tigers sit second in the Conference with a 16-7-2-3 mark.
The Wheat Kings will close out this road trip next Friday in Swift Current, before returning home the following night to play the Tigers at Westman Place.
