Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings regained sole posession of top spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference Wednesday night with a 5-3 victoy over the visiting Red Deer Rebels at Westman Place.
The win coupled with Saskatoon's 7-3 loss in Prince Albert moves Brandon one point ahead of the Blades. Saskatoon, however, still has three games in hand.
Brayden Schenn scored twice and set up another to pace the Wheat Kings, who ran their winning streak to six games. Shayne Wiebe, Matt Calvert and Jay Fehr also scored for Brandon, who plays host to the Kootenay Ice on Friday night.
Wiebe's shorthanded goal three minutes into the second period came after video review.
John Persson, Turner Elson and Willie Coetzee scored the goals for Red Deer while Kraymar Barnstable made 34 saves.
Jacob De Serres backstopped the Wheat Kings with 27 saves as Brandon improved to 36-16-0-3 on the season. The victory was also Brandon's thirteenth in their past 14 games on home ice (13-0-0-1).
A busy week for the Wheat Kings continues Thursday night as the UCT Pavillion will host the 2010 CKLQ Sportsman's Dinner, in support of the hockey club's Scholarship Foundation. Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald will headline the event, which has been sold out for over a week.
Meanwhile the WHL club has announced that all tips received at Thursday night's Coat Check will be donated to Teens Against Drunk Driving at Vincent Massey.
Tickets to Friday's game between the Wheat Kings and Ice are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
