Wheat Kings Facing Tough Weekend Assignment

March 2, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings certainly have their work cut out for them this weekend as they kick off the annual March playoff push.

The Wheat Kings, who currently occupy one of the final two wild card berths in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division, host the first place Moose Jaw Warriors tonight, before travelling to Swift Current to meet the second place Broncos on Saturday.

The Wheat Kings, who are fresh off a 4-game in five night road trip that saw them post a .500 record (2-2-0), currently lead the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders by six points with nine games remaining in the 2017-18 regular season.

Only two of the three teams will have the opportunity to punch their ticket to post-season play.

Brandon head coach David Anning said his players need to learn from Tuesday's lopsided loss in Prince Albert and be much better prepared for what will be a stiff test to say the least.

"We're playing two quality teams and two divisional rivals," Anning told the Brandon Sun's Perry Bergson. "We need to respond well after Tuesday night. We want to get back on track and have a good team game and we want to be competitive. We really hurt ourselves on Tuesday in terms of managing the puck and playing a clean game. That has to be the focus. Everything is magnified when you're playing a quality team, especially this time of year. You have to help yourself shift after shift."

Prince Albert faces Swift Current and the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the weekend, with Saskatoon hosting Lethbridge and also facing Moose Jaw.

When it comes to the Warriors, Brandon will be facing a club that has dominated the season series. Moose Jaw has won the first four games between the two teams this season, with four more to play, including a home and home series to close out the year.

"It's going to be a tough weekend for us," says veteran Connor Gutenberg, who was recently named the Wheat Kings TELUS Player of the Month for February.. "The Warriors and Broncos are at the top...but we're ready for the challenge."

Following the weekend the Wheat Kings will host Lethbridge on Tuesday, which will be the final "2 for Tuesday" of the campaign.

Tickets to all five of Brandon's remaining home games, including the 2018 Awards Night, presented by the Victoria Inn Hotel and Conference Centre are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.

Friday's game is a presentation of Ashley HomeStore.
