Wheat Kings Score Huge Win Friday
March 2, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - It took five games but the Brandon Wheat Kings may have finally solved the Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and then rode the goaltending of Logan Thompson to an exciting 4-2 victory over the league leading Warriors, who had won the first four games of the 8-game season series between the two.
Thompson was outstanding Friday night, turning aside 41 shots, including twenty in the third period when Moose Jaw pressed for the equalizer.
After Justin Almeida connected on the powerplay midway through the third to pull the Warriors to within a goal, the 20-year old netminder shut the door as the Wheat Kings improved to 34-25-3-2 on the season.
Ty Lewis regained Brandon's two goal cushion with seven minutes to play as the Wheat Kings moved past Regina and back into third place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division, with eight games to play.
For Lewis, it was his third goal of the night and team leading 39th of the season.
The 19-year old local product continues to lead the club in scoring and his 89 points are good enough for a seventh place tie in the WHL scoring race.
Stelio Mattheos - with his 38th of the year - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who led 3-1 after both the first and second periods of play.
Barrett Sheen also scored for the Warriors, who outshot Brandon 43-21.
Not only did the Wheat Kings slip past Regina into third place, they moved eight points up on the sixth place Saskatoon Blades, who fell 5-3 to Lethbridge.
The Prince Albert Raiders meanwhile continued their winning ways by outlasting Swift Current 5-4 in a shootout for their fifth consecutive win.
The Raiders have now moved to within five points of Regina and remain six back of Brandon with two weeks remaining in the 2017-18 regular season.
Brandon now hits the road for a Saturday night game in Swift Current against the second place Broncos, before returning home to host Lethbridge on Tuesday night - the final "2 for Tuesday" of the season.
That means western Manitoba hockey fans will have one last chance to take advantage of this special 2 for 1 ticket offer.
As well, the Keystone Centre will be offering a number of concession specials on popcorn, hot dogs, soft drinks and beer.
The Keystone box office will reopen at 10am Saturday but fans can also order online at keystonecentre.ca or by calling (204) 726-3555.
