Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Dauphin, MB. - The Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series between the Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers has become a best of three.
The Wheat Kings evened the best of seven series at two Wednesday night with an impressive 5-2 victory before close to 1,300 fans at Credit Union Place in Dauphin.
Brandon jumped out to a 3-0 second period lead and were full marks for their second win in as many nights, getting goals from five different players including Gunnar Wegleitner, who added an assist.
In making his second straight start in goal, Dylan Myskiw turned aside 38 shots to post the win.
"It was a solid team effort tonight," Brandon coach David Anning told Branden Crowe on Q Country radio's post game show. "We had a great start to the game...we played with intensity and our work ethic has improved with each game."
As for his goalkeeper, Anning says that the Winnipegger was solid from start to finish.
"Dylan didn't give up a lot of rebounds (tonight)...limited the second chances. He was tracking the puck and getting big at the edge of the crease. He was solid."
Stelio Mattheos, Cole Reinhardt, Linden McCorrister and defenceman Daniel Bukac rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who led 2-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks.
Josh Williams and Mark Rassell scored in a losing cause for the Tigers, who went 0 for 5 on the powerplay. Brandon was 1 for 2 with the man advantage.
The series will now shift back to Alberta for game five on Friday night, before returning to Credit Union Place in Dauphin for a 7pm start Easter Sunday.
The Wheat Kings, who compiled the third best home ice record in the WHL this past season at 27-6-2-1 have been forced to play their first round playoff home games in Dauphin this week as the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair occupies Brandon's Keystone Centre.
Should a seventh and deciding game be necessary, it will be played Tuesday night in Medicine Hat.
Tickets to Sunday night's game will go back on sale Thursday morning at 10am at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
