Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- In what has become an annual tradition in Brandon - a Remembrance Day matinee at Westman Place - the Brandon Wheat Kings doubled up on the visiting Everett Silvertips 6-3 Tuesday before their largest crowd of the 2008-09 Western Hockey League regular season.
Veteran Andrew Clark scored two shorthanded goals and Matt Calvert added a goal and two helpers as the Wheat Kings improved their record to 12-7-1-0 on the season.
A crowd of 4,848 was on hand, as the Wheat Kings celebrated the unofficial kick-off to Manitoba Minor Hockey Week. As well, the game featured a Moment of Silence before the opening face-off, in honour of those Canadians lost in combat, including ten from Canadian Forces Base Shilo in the past year. Among those performing the ceremonial opening face-off on Tuesday were Lieutenant-Colonel John Schneiderbanger and Base Chief Warrant Officer Steven Walsh from CFB Shilo.
Over twenty minor hockey teams from across western Manitoba attended the game, courtesy of Koch Fertilizer Canada Ltd.
As for the game, after swapping first period goals, the Wheat Kings led 4-3 through forty minutes of play. Del Cowan, Nathan Green and Scott Glennie scored Brandon's other goals while former Wheat King Daniel Bartek had one of Everett's tallies.
Second year goalkeeper James Priestner made 25 saves for the Wheat Kings, including nineteen through the first two periods of play. Shayne Barrie had 23 stops for the 'Tips.
Brandon's current 7-game homestand continues this weekend with games against the Calgary Hitmen on Friday and the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday. The defending Memorial Cup Champion Spokane Chiefs will invade the Keystone Centre on Tuesday.
Tickets for all three games are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
