November 12, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Winnipeg, Manitoba - Hockey Manitoba and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association are pleased to announce the members for Team West that will be competing in the Under 17 World Hockey Challenge and the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be well represented.
This year's Tournament is scheduled to be played in the Alberni Valley, British Colombia from December 29, 2008 to January 4, 2009.
Making the roster, unveiled Wednesday in Winnipeg, is 16-year old Wheat Kings' rookie Mark Stone as well as right-winger Jordan DePape and defenceman Kyle Krzyaniak. Krzyaniak is currently skating with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Neepawa Natives while DePape is with the MJHL's Winnipeg Saints.
In fourteen games with the Wheat Kings this season, Stone has thee goals, five points and six minutes in penatlies.
A former third round draft choice of the Wheat Kings in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft, DePape currently leads all MJHL rookies in scoring with twelve goals and 28 points in 23 games. Krzyaniak meanwhile has appeared in 22 games for the Natives this season, registering 27 minutes in penatlies.
The announcement of the final roster, which includes 11 players from Saskatchewan and 11 players from Manitoba, concludes a lengthy selection process that has been going on in both provinces. Players first take part in regional camps. The top players from each region then compete against each other in a Spring Tournament, and from there, the top players attend a Summer Camp. Eleven (11) players are then chosen from each of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Branches to form Team West.
Team West will look to continue their strong showing at this event, and will contend for a medal. The coaching staff is confident in this team's abilities. Head Coach Paul Krueger (Winnipeg, M anitoba) feels we have another competative team. "We are looking to continue the high standard set by past teams, and we feel we have the right players to do just that" Krueger explained.
Other Manitobans named to this year's Team West are Mathew Glowa, Quinton Howden, Brooks Macek, Dylan McIlrath, Calvin Pickard, Michael St. Croix, Peter Stoykewych and Nolan Zajac.
Joining the Manitoba players will be the Saskatchewan contingent of: Sean Aschim, Carter Berg, Drew Czerwonka, Dominick Favreau, Charles Inglis, Tyler Kizuik, Christian Magnus, Kendall McFaull, Jaden Schwartz, Derek Tendler and Dylan Wruck.
Team West departs for Port Alberni on December 26th and will see its first action in an exhibition game against Russia on Sunday, December 28th. Tournament play begins Saturday, December 29th versus Quebec.
