Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Prince Albert, Sask. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to five games Sunday night and eliminated the Prince Albert Raiders from playoff contention in the process with a 4-2 victory Sunday night.

The win, coupled with Saskatoon's 6-1 loss to the Eastern Conference leading Hitmen in Calgary, moved Brandon three points up on the Blades in the battle for top spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.

Michael Ferland's goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second period proved to be the difference as the Wheat Kings improved their record to 47-18-1-3, good for 98 points.

Brayden Schenn, Aaron Lewadniuk and Jay Fehr also scored goals for the Wheat Kings, who led 2-0 and 3-2 at the period breaks.

Ryan Harrison and Craig McCallum replied for the Raiders, who were outshot 35-23. Andrew Hayes made 21 saves, in posting his second win in as many games.

Sunday's game marked the return of 17-year old Mark Stone to the Brandon lineup. The second year Winnipeg product, who had two assists in the game, had been sidelined since February 19th when he suffered a concussion during a game against the Regina Pats.

With three games remaining in the regular season and a three point lead on the Blades, the Wheat Kings now control their own destiny. Brandon's next game is Wednesday night - Rain Check Night - against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Fans can exchange unused tickets (since Christmas) at the Keystone Centre box office for free tickets to Wednesday's game, which will feature a Special Salute to the Brandon Humane Society. Those attending the game will be encouraged to purchase a numbered tennis ball for a chance to win a 2010-11 Wheat Kings' Season Ticket.

Brandon will close out the regular season with a home and home series against Regina next weekend.
