DES MOINES, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (18-19-0-1) edged by the Des Moines Buccaneers (15-19-2-2) with a 2-1 shootout win on Saturday night at Buccaneer Arena.
Buccaneers forward Erik Urbank converted on a turnover at 1:08 of the first period to open the scoring early, 1-0. A five-minute power play helped the Stars get on the board at 5:01 thanks to a pass from forward Casey Dornbach that found forward Paul Cotter in the left circle, tying the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless second and third period, both sides went to a shootout. In the fourth round, Stars forward Gustaf Westlund flipped a backhanded shot from the right circle by the sprawling netminder to score the first and only goal in the shootout, grabbing the 2-1 win and two points.
Stars goaltender Tomáš Vomá?ka (12-15-0) saved 24 of 25 shots as well as all four shootout attempts in the win, while Buccaneers netminder Roman Durny (4-4-2) halted 31 of 32 shots in the shootout loss.
