ELMA, N.Y. (Thursday, November 13, 2014) - The Western New York Flash announced today that the club has acquired the rights to goalkeeper Chantel Jones from the Washington Spirit in exchange for goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and a fourth round pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft.
"In Chantel Jones we're getting what we believe is a starting goalkeeper in the NWSL," said Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines. "She's been blooded into the professional game, has proven that she can play in this league and is looking for the opportunity to be the number one goalkeeper."
Jones, 26, was signed as a discovery player by the Spirit at the start of the 2013 season and spent two years as a backup to U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. Last season, Jones started five games for Washington, making 22 saves over 450 minutes. In 2013, Jones started in four games and picked up a 1-0 shutout win at Chicago on Aug. 7, 2013.
A four-year starter at the University of Virginia, Jones holds the NCAA record for most career shutouts with 47. She also holds the school record for goals against average (0.65) and ranks second in all-time saves (243). Her 14 shutouts during the 2011 season still stands as the University's single-season record.
On the international stage, Jones represented the USA in the 2007 Pan American Games and as a member of the U-20 U.S. Women's National Team during the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile.
Wys, 23, was selected by the Flash in the second round (No. 18 overall) of the 2014 NWSL College Draft. In her rookie season, she appeared in 10 games, compiling a 2-6-2 record. In 887 minutes of play, the Florida State product totaled 47 saves and recorded one shutout. She earned her first career win in her professional debut, a 2-0 victory over Sky Blue FC on May 11.
"Kelsey got a lot of minutes for a rookie keeper during the 2014 season and I thank her for all of her service to the club," Lines added. "I wish her the best of luck with the Spirit."
Jones is currently playing with Canberra United in the Westfield W-League. Previously, the Midlothian, Va. native played for Perth Glory in Australia and Ãór Akureyri in Iceland.
