Spirit Acquire Goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and 2016 Draft Pick from Western New York Flash

BOYDS, Md. (Nov. 13, 2014) - The Washington Spirit announced today the club has acquired goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and a fourth round pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft from the Western New York Flash in exchange for the rights to goalkeeper Chantel Jones.

"Kelsey has been a target since the end of the season and I am very pleased we have been successful in bringing her to D.C.," Spirit general manager and head coach Mark Parsons said. "Our staff has identified Kelsey as one of the best young goalkeepers in the country and we look forward to her playing a big role in 2015."

Wys, 23, was drafted in the second round (No. 18 overall) of the 2014 NWSL College Draft. The Coral Springs, Fla. native made nine starts in 10 appearances as a rookie for the Flash in 2014, recording one shutout and 47 saves.

Wys enjoyed a very successful career at Florida State University where she holds 17 program goalkeeping records, including minutes played (8,518), wins (74), shutouts (45) and starts (96).

Jones, 26, joined the Spirit as a discovery player prior to the 2013 season and spent two years as the club's backup goalkeeper. The University of Virginia alum made nine appearances in two seasons with the Spirit, recording 37 saves during her tenure.

"Chantel has been an important character for the team and played a big role when we needed her in the last two seasons," Parsons said. "On behalf of the club I wish her all the best in the next step in her career"

Jones is currently playing with Canberra United in the Westfield W-League.
