Welcome Back, John Waldron

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

John Waldron returned to the Waterloo Black Hawks' lineup with two goals, including the eventual game-winner, during a 5-3 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday at Young Arena.

Waldron had not played since January 14th but made the most of his early minutes back on the ice. The game was 10:30 old when James Hong forced a turnover near the red line, sending Waldron up the slot on a partial breakaway. From above the hash marks, he picked the top corner over goalie Paxton Geisel's left shoulder.

Waterloo made it 2-0 during a power play at 16:36. Tucker Ness moved from the left point toward the corner and let loose a sharp-angled chance that eluded Geisel. However, the two-goal lead only lasted 30 seconds. A turnover near the Dubuque line led to a two-on-none rush with Connor Kurth setting up Jackson Hallum for the finish.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period beginning at 8:54. The Saints looked like they had won a defensive zone draw, but the puck squirted to Cam VanSickle just below the hashmark; he pounced on the sudden one-on-one opportunity against Geisel.

In this instance, the two-goal margin lasted almost three minutes until Dubuque cashed in on a chance developed behind the Waterloo net. William Hallen put a pass on Kenny' Connors' stick, and Connors scored from the left dot.

Twenty seconds into the third period, Waldron struck for his second of the night. Conner Brown made the play possible, stepping behind the net but reversing the puck behind his back to Waldron coming through the right circle. Geisel could not recover from right to left in time to stop Waldron from roofing his chance under the crossbar.

In the late stages, the Fighting Saints played with an extra attacker for nearly a minute before pulling to within one goal, one last time. Kurth scored from the slot at 17:26 on the rebound of an attempt from Axel Kumlin.

Almost a minute later, the Saints were trying to bring Geisel back to the bench, but he was caught in no-man's-land when the Saints turned it over near the red line. Brown lifted a dipping shot from the center circle under the crossbar as Geisel scrambled unsuccessfully back toward the crease.

Dubuque outshot the Hawks in every period and finished the game with 41 chances, but Emmett Croteau battled through, making 38 saves for the victory. That included all of Dubuque's power play attempts; Waterloo went three-for-three on the penalty kill.

The Black Hawks remain home on Saturday to host the Des Moines Buccaneers. It's Ladies Night, presented by Bud Light Next. Tickets are still available from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or by visiting tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
