Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints threw everything and the kitchen sink at the Waterloo Black Hawks net. Unfortunately, not enough stuck. Waterloo goaltender Emmett Croteau made 38 saves on 41 shots fired his way, and the Hawks pulled away just enough to topple the Fighting Saints 5-3 on Friday night at Young Arena.
The Fighting Saints got back within a goal on three different occasions, but Waterloo had an answer at each turn. The Saints outshot the Hawks 41-26 for the game. They only allowed double digit shots against in the third period.
Ultimately, it was John Waldron's goal 20 seconds into the third period that set the tone for the rest of the game. A turnover at the side of the net proved costly, as Connor Brown picked up Waldron at the side of the net, where he scored his second goal of the game.
With Paxton Geisel at the bench for the extra attacker, the Fighting Saints got within a goal. Connor Kurth stashed in the rebound out of a scramble at 17:26. However, a mix-up in the neutral zone ended the rally. Connor Brown stole a puck in center and put the puck into the net to seal the deal.
The Saints were forced to chase the game after allowing the game's first two goals. Waldron scored his first of the night after picking off a pass in center and roofing a shot on a breakaway. Tucker Ness added another tally late in the first period to extend the lead from a sharp angle on the power play.
Dubuque took advantage of a Waterloo mistake in kind. Kurth blocked a shot and advanced on a breakaway. The speed of Jackson Hallum allowed him to catch up to the play, and Kurth threaded the needle to the new guy for his first goal as a Saint, his 22nd of the season, with just under three minutes to play in the first period.
Both teams traded tallies in the second period. A miscue on the faceoff led to Cam VanSickle getting inside position in the offensive zone and his goal added to Waterloo's lead to get them to 3-1. But, before the period was over, the Fighting Saints responded in kind. William Hallén's initial opportunity at the side of the net was stopped, but he found Kenny Connors alone in the circle and bested Croteau to once again get within a goal.
Hallum added a goal, and Davis Burnside, the other newcomer to the lineup, posted five shots on goal in his Dubuque debut.
The Saints are back in action Saturday, February 26 against the Youngstown Phantoms. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
