Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Atlanta Braves made the following roster moves following yesterday's game in Montogomery, which affect the Mississippi Braves roster. RHP Patrick Weigel and RHP Huascar Ynoa were promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett while RHP Elian Leyva and RHP Andres Santiago were transferred to Mississippi's roster from Gwinnett.
Weigel, 24, made seven starts for the M-Braves this season, going 0-1 with a 1.72 ERA (3 ER/15.2 IP), nine walks, 16 strikeouts, holding the opposition to just a .145 opponent's batting average.
Weigel's first start on April 7 was his first (non GCL) start in 658 days (June 8, 2017 w/GWIN). The No. 18 overall prospect for the Braves underwent "Tommy John" surgery on June 27, 2017, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, FL. Prior to being placed on the disabled list in 2017, Weigel made 15 starts on the season between Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett, going 6-2 with a 4.14 ERA (36 ER/78.1 IP) and 68 strikeouts. Weigel missed the remainder of the 2017 season and most of the 2018 season, making just four rehab appearances (three starts) with the GCL Braves, and tossed 4.0 scoreless innings with two hits and six strikeouts.
Atlanta selected Weigel's contract on November 20, 2018 (added to 40-man roster) and was drafted by the Braves in the seventh round in 2015 out of the University of Houston.
Ynoa, 20, the No. 13 overall prospect for the Braves made six relief appearances for the M-Braves this season, going 1-2 with a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP), five walks and 15 strikeouts. Ynoa opened 2019 with High-A Florida and went 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP) in three starts, six walks, and 16 strikeouts. He collected his first career save on May 3 vs. Jacksonville and his six relief outings for Mississippi were the first of his career. Ynoa has logged 31 strikeouts in 24.2 overall innings this season.
The Braves selected his contract on November 20, 2018 (added to 40-man roster). The Braves acquired Ynoa from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for LHP Jaime GarcÃa, C Anthony Recker and cash considerations on July 24, 2017. The Twins signed Ynoa as a minor-league free agent on July 2, 2014.
Leyva, 30, made nine appearances, two starts for the Stripers this season, posting no record and a 5.00 ERA (10 ER/18.0 IP), two walks, 16 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP.
The Lleida, Spain native spent his first affiliated season between Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett in 2018, combining to go 4-3 with a 2.69 ERA (26 ER/87.0 IP). His 2.69 ERA stood as the fifth lowest among Atlanta farmhands with at least 75.0 innings pitched.
The Braves signed Leyva as a non-drafted free agent on November 11, 2016.
Santiago, 29, made nine appearances, five starts for the Stripers going 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA (15 ER/30.0 IP), 17 walks, 18 strikeouts, and 1.63 WHIP.
The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native combined to go 6-6 over 26 games (15 starts) between Triple-A Gwinnett and Mississippi in 2018. The Braves signed Santiago as a minor-league free agent on March 14, 2017 and split his season between four levels of the Atlanta system, combining to go 4-8 with a 5.38 ERA (45 ER/75.1 IP) and 72 strikeouts between Florida (A+), Rome (A), Gwinnett (AAA) and Mississippi.
Santiago has made 225 appearances, including 131 starts over his 12-year minor-league career, going 48-55 with a 4.63 ERA with 734 strikeouts in 879.2 innings pitched. The Los Angeles Dodgers originally signed Santiago on June 13, 2007.
