LAST GAME: The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, swept a double-header from the Mobile BayBears on Monday, winning their first 2019 series at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Generals (20-16) improved to 3-3 in double-headers with the victories, while Mobile (15-22) stayed winless against Jackson in 2019.
Full Recap: JacksonGeneralsBaseball.com.
TODAY'S PITCHING MATCHUP: Generals right-hander Justin Donatella returns after a six-game stint at Triple-A Reno, where he went 2-2 with an 8.42 ERA. Last time he started at Jackson, the Generals won on Opening Night, with Donatella allowing just one hit to Jacksonville over five innings. Donatella's latest outing came against Triple-A Tacoma on May 7, when he conceded just two runs over five innings of work to earn the win. Mobile's starter is unknown.
VARSHO'S VERY GOOD DAY: Catcher Daulton Varsho went 7-for-9 with three runs scored and three doubles during the Generals' May 13 twin-bill at Mobile. Varsho's offensive efforts as a catcher have been elite so far, with his twelve runs scored, six doubles, four home runs, and four stolen bases leading all SL backstops. Read more about Daulton's success here.
SMITH THROWING SMOKE: In his May 13 start at Mobile, Riley Smith became the first General to throw a complete game of 7+ innings since Joel Payamps in August of 2018. Smith has been an early season force: he's one of only seven Southern League pitchers with a complete game already tossed (a list that includes a five-inning, rain-shortened start from Kevin McCanna), and his 2.40 ERA and 41 1/3 innings pitched are both top-10 marks in the Southern League through May 13.
