Weekly Update: Over 50,000 Fans Attend Cali Clasico at Stanford Stadium

The San Jose Earthquakes begin their two-match road trip this week when they take on the Portland Timbers on Saturday, July 7 at 8:00 p.m. PT at Providence Park. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

The San Jose Earthquakes and rival LA Galaxy finished in a 3-3 tie this past Saturday at Stanford Stadium. The match drew an attendance of 50,743 fans, the second-largest attendance in California Clasico history. Chris Wondolowski scored his 139th and 140th career goals in the match and is now just six goals away from breaking the all-time MLS goal-scoring record held by Landon Donovan (145).

The San Jose Earthquakes are showing all of the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches at Avaya Stadium. Earlier today, 7,500 fans attended the Mexico vs. Brazil Round of 16 match, which finished 2-0 in favor of the Brazilians. B-roll of the event can be downloaded here.

History of the Quakes - Portland Timbers Rivalry

The Earthquakes and Timbers rivalry dates back to when the teams played in the North American Soccer League ... The squads faced off for the first time as members of the NASL in 1975 in San Jose and the Earthquakes were victorious 2-1 with Ilija Mitic scoring both goals for the Quakes ... The Timbers evened the series with a 2-1 home victory towards the end of the '75 season ... In 1976 the teams only met once and Portland got the better of the Earthquakes in a 1-0 victory in San Jose ... The Earthquakes swept the 1977 season series with a 3-2 victory at home and 2-1 win in Portland ... The Timbers came back in 1978 and outscored the Earthquakes 8-2 in two wins on their way to the NASL National Conference Final, where they lost to the New York Cosmos ... The teams split the 1979 series with Portland winning 4-3 in San Jose and the Earthquakes winning 2-1 in Portland ...In 1980, the Earthquakes dropped both games to the Timbers, losing each match by just one goal ... The Timbers got the best of the Earthquakes in 1981 as well, sweeping the season series by finals of 3-0 and 2-1 ... 1982 was the last NASL series between the two teams ... MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Late Drama

The latest installment of the California Clasico saw the Quakes erase a 3-1 deficit to earn a 3-3 draw. San Jose has trailed in all seven of the Clasicos at Stanford, but lost just once (4-1-2).

Closing the Gap

In the Earthquakes' last MLS match against the LA Galaxy, forward Chris Wondolowski scored his 139th and 140th career goals. He is now just five goals away from tying Landon Donovan's record for all-time MLS goals (145). Wondolowski is also tied for the third most goals against LA in MLS history with 12, and third in penalty-kick goals with 24 (Jaime Moreno 44, Landon Donovan 31).

Player to Watch

Quakes Designated Player Vako scored his fourth goal of the season on Saturday and has now tallied nine goals and six assists in 30 appearances since joining the club midseason in 2017, averaging a point every other game.

Mano a Mano

In matches between the two teams, Chris Wondolowski and Diego Valeri lead their squads in goals (Wondolowski 10, Valeri 6) and shots on goal (Wondolowski 20, Valeri 21).

Reinforcements

Quakes players Anibal Godoy and Harold Cummings return to San Jose after participating in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with the Panama National Team. The Timbers may also see the return of Andy Polo (Peru) and David Guzman (Costa Rica) who also participated in the World Cup.

Chris Wondolowski is the all-time leading goal scorer against the Portland Timbers with 10.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The U-17 Girls' Academy have won all four of their matches in the Development Academy Playoffs, including a 2-1 win over Penn Fusion in the quarterfinals. This week, the U-17s will head to Kansas City for their semifinal match against Nationals on Monday, July 9. The U-15 Girls' Academy season has come to an end following a 2-1 loss to San Diego Surf in the quarterfinals.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Last Saturday, June 30, Reno 1868 FC tallied a 1-0 win against Portland Timbers 2 at Greater Nevada Field. Quakes forward Danny Musovski scored Reno's lone goal to secure three points for Reno. Reno will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 matches when they host Real Monarchs SLC on Tuesday, July 3, at Greater Nevada Field.
