Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes fell victim to a shutout Saturday night as Salem-Keizer dropped a 1-0 decision to the Eugene Emeralds in the series finale at PK Park.
Salem-Keizer threatened in the ninth, placing men at the corners with just one out, but Emeralds reliever Pedro Araujo escaped the jam with the lead intact.
A night after totaling nine runs on 11 hits, Salem-Keizer failed to a push a single run across the plate. It was the third time the Volcanoes have been shutout on the season.
The Emeralds tallied the game's only run in the second inning. Alberto Mineo tripled to lead off the frame, belting a soaring fly ball to center that fell just beyond center fielder Ronnie Jebavy's outstretched glove. Adonis Paula then punched a single into right, scoring Mineo and pushing Eugene out in front.
Salem-Keizer, meanwhile, struggled to come up with a big hit. The Volcanoes had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but failed to pick up a single run. Emeralds starter Oscar De La Cruz (4-2, 2.39 ERA) went on to hold Salem-Keizer scoreless through the entirety of his outing, scattering four hits while striking out seven through six innings of work.
The Eugene bullpen picked up where De La Cruz left off over the remainder of the evening, firing three scoreless innings.
Volcanoes starter Logan Webb (3-4, 4.85 ERA) pitched well in his first start after the All-Star break, allowing just one run on six hits through six innings - his longest outing since tossing six frames on July 9. The quality start was a welcome sight for Webb, who lasted just 2/3 of an inning and surrendered six runs in his last start.
Player of the Game: C.J. Hinojosa went 3-for-4 on the night with two doubles. He advanced to third all three times he reached but he never advanced any further as the Volcanoes failed to score a run.
