NWL1 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes

McCall's Homer Isn't Enough in Loss

August 9, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

The Volcanoes led early but Hillsboro came back to take the series opener Sunday night, defeating Salem-Keizer 4-2 in front of 2,361 fans at Volcanoes Stadium.

Hops starter Carlos Hernandez (4-1, 1.68 ERA) entered the contest with a sparkling 1.53 ERA - the best mark in the Northwest League. He lived up to that reputation on Sunday, allowing just two runs through six innings of work.

His only mistake came in the third as he briefly allowed Salem-Keizer to take the lead. John Riley singled to lead off the inning before Shilo McCall blasted a two-run homer to left, pushing the Volcanoes out in front. It was just the second home run Hernandez had allowed all season and his first in over 31 innings.

Hillsboro fought back in the fifth, tying the game at two runs apiece. Nate Robertson singled with one out in the inning and scored when right fielder Steven Duggar mishandled a single by Sergio Alcantara, cutting the deficit in half. Jake Peevyhouse then laced a single into center, advancing Alcantara to third, before Fernery Ozuna lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Alcantara and tied the game. The two runs were the first earned runs Volcanoes starter Luis Pino had allowed all season.

The Hops broke the tie in the sixth, tallying two more runs to take the lead. With the bases loaded and just one out, Alcantara slapped a single into left off of reliever Nate Santiago (1-2, 3.42 ERA) to drive in two and put the Hops ahead, 4-2.

Salem-Keizer threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but reliever Troy Mark escaped the jam without allowing a run. Breckin Williams tossed a scoreless eighth before Cameron Gann retired the Volcanoes in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Player of the Game: Shilo McCall provided a spark for an otherwise sluggish offense, hitting his fifth home run of the season.

Up Next: The Volcanoes continue their series with the Hillsboro Hops Monday night. Drew Leenhouts (6-2, 1.99 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. Cody Reed (4-2, 2.60 ERA) will start for Hillsboro. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
