Weaver Starts, Adams Finishes in Marathon Win

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers got a start from Angels righty Jered Weaver on Tuesday evening and a walk-off double from Caleb Adams near the witching-hour to down the Lake Elsinore Storm 6-5 in 14 innings at San Manuel Stadium. The 66ers marathon win got them back to .500 at 53-53 overall and 18-18 in the second half. The Storm suffered its eighth-straight defeat.

Weaver made his second outing of the home-stand for the 66ers and was perfect through the first thee frames. He struck out five of the first nine men he faced. The righty would allow an unearned run in the fourth and then solo homers to Storm batters Chase Jensen and Donavan Tate in the fifth and sixth inning respectively. He finished allowing just three hits and two earned runs over 5.2 innings of work striking out five and walking two on 84 pitches.

The 66ers carried a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning but could not hold onto it. Hemet, CA native Ryan Miller doubled off IE closer Geoff Broussard and eventually scored the tying run on Gabriel Quintana's sac fly.

The 66ers handed the ball to Alex Blackford in the tenth after failing to score in the bottom of the ninth. It proved to be the right call. The righty from Centennial, CO suffocated the Storm (39-69, 8-30) with four perfect frames of work. Lake Elsinore finally touched the Arizona State alum in the top of the 14th inning with one out. Marcus Davis flared a double to right and scored on Fernando Perez' single to make the score 5-4. Blackford (2-2) was in danger of taking the loss despite 5.0 IP, 2H, 1R, 0BB and 9 K's.

Lake Elsinore turned to southpaw Griffin Russell (0-1) in the bottom of the 14th. The lefty joined the club on Tuesday and promptly gave up singles to Mike Fish and Eric Aguilera. Russell got the next two batters in order. With two down, Sixers' right fielder Caleb Adams fell behind in the count 1-2. He battled the count back to full. The Lafayette, LA native, 0-for-5 on the night until then drilled a ball off the wall in right to score Fish and Aguilera and start the celebration for the 66ers' 6-5 win. The contest was the 66ers longest of the season at 14 innings and 4:37.
