Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Francis Martes provided the JetHawks with a quality start and received plentiful run support in a 10-2 win over the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
Martes (1-1) limited the Blaze (40-68) to two runs (one earned) on four hits and combined with Andrew Walter for a season-high 16 strikeouts in the game. Chase McDonald, James Ramsay and J.D. Davis each homered in the contest, and Davis finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the JetHawks (54-54) and forced a rubber game for Wednesday.
Lancaster opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Davis hit a RBI-double to left field and Ronnie Mitchell added a RBI-single to center.
Bakersfield cut the JetHawks' lead to one run on a Nelson Ward RBI-single in the top of the third, but Lancaster tallied four runs against Tyler Pike (2-5) in the bottom half. Four consecutive singles, including RBI-singles by Davis and Mitchell, opened the inning. Jamie Ritchie followed with a squeeze bunt to score Davis from third, and Mott Hyde plated an additional run on a groundout for a 6-1 lead.
Ramsay and Davis both hit solo homers in the fourth against Pike, who yielded a season-high eight runs on 10 hits.
The Blaze would score just one more run in the game. Martes was finished after issuing a one-out walk in the seventh inning, and two singles off Walter plated Bakersfield's second run. Walter, however, would not allow a baserunner over his final two innings of work.
A McDonald two-run homer off Nick Valenza in the bottom of the seventh gave Lancaster its final two runs of the night.
First pitch for the rubber game of the series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. David Paulino (0-0, 1.80) will pitch for Lancaster, while Bakersfield will counter with Brett Ash (4-8, 4.18). The JetHawks will be hosting Family Night Wednesday, as fans can purchase four game tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas, all for $50.
