Last Week's Recap:
1/31 @ Milwaukee Wave 7, Steamers 1 Attendance â 5,506
Joe Reiniger scored three goals and Todd Dusosky added two goals and three assists as the Wave remained undefeated at home (9-0) by topping the St. Louis Steamers 7-1 in front of 5,506 fans Saturday afternoon (1/31) at U.S. Cellular Arena.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Wave got on the board with two goals early in the second quarter. Lovelace Ackah (1:26) and Joe Reiniger 2:29) each found the back of the net to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead, the latter score coming off a re-start pass by Leighton O'Brien. Later in the period, Kevin Burk drilled a shot off the goal frame that Todd Dusosky converted at 10:55 to give the Wave a 3-0 advantage.
The score remained 3-0 until 9:52 of the third period when defensive pressure by Todd Dusosky resulted in another Milwaukee goal. Dusosky's deflection of an attempted pass by Mali Walton trickled into an open St. Louis net as Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips was out of the penalty area at the time. Just 38 seconds later Phillips handled the ball outside of the penalty area, which resulted in a shoot-out attempt for Reiniger. The Wave forward converted against reserve goalkeeper Nando Hernandez at 10:30 to increase Milwaukee's lead to 5-0.
St. Louis scored its only goal of the contest early in the fourth period when Steve Butcher (1:56) converted a shootout attempt after a holding penalty against Wave goalkeeper, Dan Green. Butcher's attempt beat defender Troy Dusosky, who was called on to defend the goal with Green in the penalty box.
Reiniger completed the hat trick when he tallied on the power play at 7:28 to make it 6-1 in favor of the Wave. Angel Rivillo closed out the scoring at 9:31 when he took a pass from Todd Dusosky and maneuvered around a charging Phillips to roll one into a open net from 25 feet away.
Green posted six saves in securing the win for the Wave while Phillps had 13 saves for the Steamers. Milwaukee improved to 4-0 against the Steamers this season, with game five of the six game season series between the two Central Division rivals slated to take place on Sunday, March 7 (1:05 PM) at U.S. Cellular Arena.
Sun. 2/1 @ Monterrey Wave 9, Fury 6 Attendance â 7,665
Forward Greg Howes scored four goals and added a pair of assists to spark the Wave to a 9-6 win over the Monterrey Fury Sunday night (2/1) at Arena Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The victory was Milwaukee's fourth straight and improved the Wave's overall record to an MISL best 17-4. The win also enabled the Wave to sweep the four game season series from the Fury (5-16).
Howes began his scoring outburst with a power play goal at 8:47 of the first quarter to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. His second goal, a spectacular full volley from 35 feet away at 6:48 of the third quarter tied the score at 4-4. Howes added his third goal on another sensational play at 9:28 of the period when converted off a long end-board pass from goalkeeper Nick Vorberg to put Milwaukee ahead 5-4. He registered his fourth off a re-start pass from Joe Reiniger early in the fourth quarter (1:35) to put the Wave up 7-5.
Midfielder Leighton O'Brien supported Howes' effort with a season high three points (goal, two assists). O'Brien's goal with one second left in the first half started a five-goal run that enabled Milwaukee to take control of the contest.
Vorberg turned in another fine performance by stopping 17-of-23 shots faced to post the victory. Milwaukee's defense also registered 15 blocks in front of the Wave goalkeeper led by defenders Lovelace Ackah and Troy Dusosky who had four blocks and three blocks, respectively.
