
MISL Names January 2004 Players of the Month

GOALKEEPER OF THE MONTH
Peter Pappas, Philadelphia KiXX
Pappas wins his second Goalkeeper of the Month Award this season after going 4-2 with a 3.63 goals against average and a stunning .807 save percentage (96 saves on 119 shots) in January. Pappas was in net for the first MISL shutout since 1999, when he saved all 16 shots he faced in a 5-0 win over the San Diego Sockers on January 17. The native of Toronto made at least 15 saves in four of his six January starts, including his perfect game against the Sockers and a season-best 24-save performance against Cleveland on January 31. Pappas won two Goalkeeper of the Week Awards during the month, for the seven-day periods ending January 19 and February 2. The 31-year-old is currently third in the League in goals against average (4.48), wins (12), and saves (259). Additionally, Pappas, who was also named the Goalkeeper of the Month for October, ranks fourth in the League with 1,084 minutes played and second with a .762 save percentage.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Pat Morris, Philadelphia KiXX
Morris scored five points (three goals, two assists) and blocked 19 shots in eight games during January. The 26-year-old was at his finest as the month closed, blocking seven shots in a 5-4 win against the Monterrey Fury on January 29 and scoring two goals as the KiXX defeated Cleveland 7-3 on January 31. Morris earned his second Defensive Player of the Week Award of the season on January 12 (December 29 was the first). The Philadelphia native has scored 12 goals and 16 points in 21 games this season, and ranks second in the MISL with 46 blocks.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Carlos Farias, Baltimore Blast
Farias led all MISL scorers with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in January as he surged towards the top of the League's scoring charts. The 27-year-old, acquired in an offseason trade with San Diego, recorded at least one point in eight of his nine games during the month and finished with multiple points in seven of those matches. He scored 14 points over his final five January games. Farias had his best game of 2003-04 in a 7-6 loss in Dallas on January 24, finishing with three goals (his first hat trick of the season) and two assists for five points. He was named the League's Offensive Player of the Week on January 26. The Chilean playmaker now ranks third in the MISL with 42 points and leads the circuit with 30 assists.
