Comets acquire Scheer, Cole from St. Louis

Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that the team has traded Franck M'Bemba for two St. Louis Steamers players, midfielder Craig Scheer and forward Jason Cole.

Scheer, who turns 28 later this month, played on the 2002-03 Baltimore Blast Championship team before he joined the Steamers this season. In two seasons with the Blast, the 6-foot, 170 pound midfielder played in 52 games and recorded 11 points and 24 blocks. In 17 games this season, Scheer scored eight goals for eight points and blocked 13 shots.

Scheer is a native of Cape Girardeau, MO. In college, he played soccer at the University of Illinois-Springfield and the Lewis and Clark Community College. He was a two-time NAIA All-American. He played at Cape Girardeau Central High School in the early 1990s.

Cole, 23, returns to play in his hometown of Kansas City. In 19 games for the Steamers, the 5-10, 170-pound forward scored five goals and assisted on two others for seven points. He blocked nine shots.

Prior to joining the MISL, Cole played for the Syracuse Salty Dogs and the Cincinnati Riverhawks of the United Soccer Leagues A-League. He was the Colorado Rapids' third-round pick in the 2003 Major League Soccer draft.

As a senior at St. Louis University, Cole scored 18 goals and assisted on six others in 21 games. He was named the Conference USA Player of the Year. In 1998, Cole was named the Missouri State High School Player of the Year after he led Rockhurst to the Missouri State Championship.

The Comets play the Baltimore Blast tomorrow at 10:35 a.m. at Kemper Arena. About 10,000 students are expected to attend the game, which features a Lewis and Clark theme.
