Comets play tough defense, defeat Wave 6-3

Kansas City (Thursday, March 31, 2005)— In a must-win situation, the Kansas City Comets took an early lead and finished strong in the fourth quarter to defeat the Milwaukee Wave 6-3 tonight at Kemper Arena. The Comets improve to 13-19 on the season and are now four games behind the Cleveland Force for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Wave falls to 20-12 but remains in first place in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The Comets have seven games remaining this season, including five at home.

In the first quarter, the Comets jumped out to a 2-0 lead after opening up the scoring at 9:56 on an unassisted goal by second-year midfielder Casey Stevens. Comets rookie James Koehler followed it up at 12:12, off an assist from Jamar Beasley. Koehler's goal came during a power play after Wave defender Joe Hammes was called for tripping. The Comets held the Wave scoreless in the first quarter and led 2-0.

In the second quarter, the Comets scored quickly and gained a three-goal lead. Justin Evans notched his 12th goal of the season after just 31 seconds, and Ibrahim Kante recorded the assist to extend his point-scoring streak to six games. Milwaukee started an offensive charge midway through the second quarter. Ricardinho tallied Milwaukee's first goal, which came during a power play at 7:11, and the Comet led 3-1 at halftime.

The Wave continued its comeback in the third quarter with two goals in the opening minutes to tie the game. Matt Schmidt scored after 49 seconds, and Marcelo Fontana notched one at 1:37. Milwaukee evened the game 3-3 early in the third quarter. Giuliano Oliviero was penalized for tripping at 14:25, and the power play extended into the fourth quarter. The game was knotted at 3-3 after three quarters.

The Comets regained the lead early in the fourth quarter. Koehler and Beasley combined again after just 57 seconds and returned the lead to the Comets (4-3). It was the Comets second power play goal of the game. The Wave inserted Schmidt as sixth attacker at 11:44 in an attempt to tie the game. The strategy backfired, as the Comets were able to score and secure a two-goal lead. Justin Evans recorded an unassisted sixth attacker goal at 13:32 to give the Comets the 5-3 lead. Jamar Beasley closed out the scoring at 14:17 with the assist off of Chris Damico, which was his third of the season. Beasley's goal sealed the deal as the Comets defeated the Wave 6-3.

NOTES: Jamar Beasley led the Comets with a goal and two assists for three points...Chris Damico recorded 14 saves in the win...Both teams successfully converted all power play opportunities. Kansas City went 2-2 and the Wave went 1-1...The Comets close out the weekend on Saturday, April 2 against the Chicago Storm. The game kicks off at 7:35 p.m. at Kemper Arena...Kansas City has seven games remaining this season, including five at Kemper Arena...They sit four games out of the fourth and final playoff spot.
