Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Kyle Watson's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh snapped the shutout, but West Virginia could not muster enough offense afterwards and dropped Sunday's contest, 6-3, to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park.
Watson cranked a 3-1 pitch off Shorebirds reliever Tim Naughton over the Marshall Orthopedics sign in center field for his fourth home run of the season, making the score 5-1 Delmarva in the seventh.
West Virginia (12-11, 49-40) cut into the Shorebirds' lead some more in the eighth. Ben Bengtson worked a one-out walk, and, two batters later, Raul Hernandez plated him with a base knock to close the deficit to 5-2.
The Power offense tallied a run in the ninth as well after Lolo Sanchez brought in Jesse Medrano from second with a single to shrink Delmarva's lead to 6-3, but Cameron Ming was able to strike out Calvin Mitchell and Oneil Cruz to end the game and subdue the rally.
After Domingo Robles (7-6) and Luis Perez (2-1) battled through three scoreless innings, Delmarva (15-9, 50-41) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Ryan Ripken singled with one out before Max Hogan drove him in with a single of his own, snapping the Shorebirds' 0-for-6 day with runners in scoring position to that point.
Robles left after 6.1 innings of work, allowing five runs on 10 hits, including a pair of homers to Zach Jarrett. The lefty gave way to Drew Fischer, who tossed a scoreless 0.2 innings on only seven pitches.
Joel Cesar worked his way out of a jam in the eighth without surrendering a run, but was unable to repeat that performance in the ninth, as Mason McCoy stroked Delmarva's third home run of the game to extend their lead to 6-2.
Perez shut down the Power's bats, not giving up a hit until the fourth and ultimately spinning six innings of four-hit ball with six strikeouts.
West Virginia continues its four-game series with Delmarva Monday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. The Power sends RHP Max Kranick (1-4, 4.14 ERA) to the bump, while the Shorebirds counter with southpaw DL Hall (1-5, 2.54 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at www.wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
