Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

November 13, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Omaha On Deck

The Omaha Lancers visit Young Arena on both Friday and Saturday night (both at 7:05 p.m.). This will be the first time in 2019/20 that the Hawks have met the same opponent on consecutive evenings. Back-to-back games against Omaha are exceedingly rare. The last time it happened was during the Clark Cup Playoffs on April 27 and 28, 2012 (Waterloo won both). The Hawks and Lancers haven't faced off against each other on two straight days during the regular season since January 13 and 14, 1989 (Omaha won both). The Lancers are currently tied for fifth in the USHL Western Conference with 12 points and a 5-6-2 record.

Drkulec Moves Toward the Top

Ryan Drkulec has recorded a point in four of his last five games, moving him into a tie for the Black Hawks' scoring lead. He and Ryder Rolston each have 11 points so far this year, with Drkulec's points coming in the form of three goals and (a team high) eight assists. Almost all of the Harvard recruit's production has come at even strength, with the exception of one power play goal recorded against the Des Moines Buccaneers on October 19th. Drkulec also has a +7 plus/minus mark, which is the top differential among Waterloo forwards.

Homestanding

On Friday, the Hawks begin their longest string of home games in 2019/20. Waterloo will play five straight at Young Arena before venturing out on the road again. The homestand includes two against Omaha and two against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, with a single game versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints sandwiched in between. Waterloo last had a five-game home stand from January 19th through February 2nd last winter. That sequence included a 5-1 win versus Omaha January 24th as the Hawks went 5-0-0.

Caponi on Home Ice

Connor Caponi is the only Black Hawk player to have recorded at least one point in all three games at Young Arena this season. He has two goals and two assists. Caponi scored the only goal in Waterloo's 1-0 win versus the Tri-City Storm during the first true home game of the year on October 12th.

Weekend Recap

The Black Hawks wrapped up six consecutive road games by making trips to visit their two closest opponents: the Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Friday in Dubuque, Wyatt Schingoethe broke a 2-2 tie on a penalty shot conversion with under two minutes remaining, giving Waterloo a 3-2 win. The result was Dubuque's first regulation loss of 2019/20. Saturday in Cedar Rapids, the RoughRiders scored three times in the third period to win 4-1. Ondrej Psenicka recorded the only Waterloo goal during the final moments of the second period. Over the six-game away span, Waterloo was 2-3-1.
