Watch for Pink Sticks with the RiverKings on Sunday
February 9, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Watch for the pink sticks used by your Mississippi RiverKings this Sunday, when the Wichita Thunder come to town for a 3:05 PM encounter at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Fighting cancer is the theme of the day and pink is the color that epitomizes the on-going effort to stop the spread of this deadly and horrible disease.
During the course of Sunday's game, eight pink sticks will be used by eight members of the RiverKings. At the conclusion of the game, the eight sticks will be put up for auction along with the special jerseys the RiverKings will be wearing during the game.
Opening bid for each stick will be $50.00 and cash or checks only can be accepted to pay for the winning bids.
The pink stick auction is organized by The RiverKings Fan Club, so only cash or checks can be accepted for this part of the post-game activities. However, none of the money from the hockey stick auction will go to the fan club. Instead, all proceeds from the auction will be split equally between the Jill Russell Foundation and the Ryan Christian Fund.
Russell, a long time fan and supporter of the RiverKings, has been battling cancer the past couple of years.
Christian, the daughter of RiverKings forward Jeff and Dorie Christian, has been fighting cancer the past year and has been undergoing treatment at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.
The stick auction and special jersey auction will be only part of the post-game events to beat cancer after the RiverKings game with the Thunder. If $2,500 is raised to the DeSoto County Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society by Sunday, forward R.G. Flath will have his head shaved by the person who donates the most money to the cause.
Next game action for the RiverKings is Friday night in Bloomington, Illinois against the PrairieThunder, starting at 7:05 PM, followed by a game with the Oilers in Tulsa on Saturday, February 12th at 7:35 PM.
