Washington Spirit News Release
Washington, D.C. - The Washington Spirit has announced the club's featured highlights for the early afternoon match against San Diego Wave FC on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m. EST as part of the team's Pride Celebration at Audi Field.
The national anthem will be performed by Team DC, a nonprofit organization established to educate the LGBTQ community on the benefits of individual and team sports participation. Established in 1990, Team DC also works within the broader community to dispel discrimination against LGBTQ people participating in sports, awards scholarships to LGBTQ student-athletes and provides a network of sporting outlets for the LGBTQ community of the Washington Metropolitan area.
The return of Spiritville, a dedicated pregame fan area where fans can gather ahead of every Spirit match at Audi Field, will be a main feature for the second time this season at Sunday's match. Spiritville will feature a tailgate zone, a kids zone, a 'get in the spirit' zone, a merchandise zone and a community zone. Also notable for the September 10 match is the return of the fan-favorite free beer offer in the tailgate zone. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will be eligible to receive a free beer as a thank you for their support of the reigning champions.
A special performance will also be featured at Spiritville before the match. Thanks to Mayor Muriel Bowser's office, a drag show will be held on the concourse at Audi Field prior to kickoff early Saturday afternoon. More details on the show will come as we approach matchday.
At the September 10 match, Spiritville will also include a special book signing with US Women's National team icon Briana Scurry. Scurry was a member of the 1996 gold medal-winning USWNT and had a very successful professional career spanning from 1994 to 2010. She will be signing copies of her recently published book "My Greatest Save: The Brave, Barrier-Breaking Journey of a World Champion Goalkeeper". A memoir following Scurry's time with the USWNT, winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the tragedies that followed thereafter, the book is a journey of triumph, tragedy and redemption throughout the course of her life. Copies of the book will be given away to all fans who attend the signing.
The game is slated for a 1 p.m. EST kickoff, moved up from the original 5 p.m. time. Due to the change, the game will now be nationally televised on CBS, rather than on Paramount +. Fans looking to attend the game can purchase tickets at www.washingtonspirit.com/tickets.
