Washington completes sweep of Crushers, scoring six runs in sixth inning

Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, were defeated by the Washington Wild Things, 7-3, as Washington scored seven times after the fifth inning to earn the sweep.
The Crushers (13-12) are now 2-7 in their last nine games and were swept for the first time this season at home. The Wild Things (14-12) take over second place in the East Division and are 4-1 against the Crushers this season.
Through the first five innings, it was a pitching battle. Crushers starter, Jordan Kraus (1-2) had pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits. Wild Things starting pitcher, Sam Agnew-Wieland (1-0), went five scoreless innings, as well, surrendering only four hits.
In the top of the sixth, Kraus hit back-to-back Washington batters before he walked Logan Uxa on four pitches. Nick Ferdinand then hit a sharp groundball to third baseman, Carlos Avila. Avila knocked the ball into foul territory before it could get down the left field line. The ball rolled to the wall and a fan picked it up. Ferdinand was awarded second base and Uxa went to third and two runs scored on the play. Jimmy Yezzo came up and hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Uxa and giving the Wild Things a 3-0 lead.
In the same inning, with runners on first and third, Grant Fink hit his third home run of the year, a three run homer to left field. Juan Avila almost caught the ball in left field, but, he hit the fence allowing the ball to bounce out of his mitt and fall out of the park. The Wild Things led, 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Wild Things would add one more as Yezzo hit his third home run of the season to right field in the seventh inning.
The Crushers only runs came from Connor Oliver's bat. Oliver, who was hitting fourth in the lineup, hit a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning and hit a two-run jack to right field in the eighth. He now leads the Crushers with six home runs.
Kraus ended up giving up three earned runs, three hits, and had five strike outs for the Crushers but picked up the loss. Three Crusher relievers worked the sixth inning, and five Crushers came out of the bullpen, overall. Kolby Moore allowed two runs and did not record an out. Chandler Jagodzinski and Juan Caballero each allowed a run. Devin Malone pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and Ryan Richardson got the final out in the ninth inning.
Washington's Agnew-Wieland went 5.1 innings in his first start of the season, picking up the win. He gave up a run on five hits. Brian O'Keefe worked 1.2 innings, striking out two hitters. Andrew Woeck pitched the eighth and gave up two runs. Kolin Stanley pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Crushers begin a new series, on Tuesday, at All Pro Freight Stadium as they take on the Windy City ThunderBolts. The Crushers will send left-hander Todd Kibby (2-2, 3.94) to the mound. The T-Bolts starting pitcher will be southpaw Brady Muller (1-3, 4.55). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
