TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-17) came back from deficits twice but they couldn't do it a third time as the Joliet Slammers(15-13) hung on to win tonight's series finale, 6-5.
After a scoreless first inning, Joliet got on the scoreboard first, with a two-run home run by Marc Flores. Carter Bell also scored after leading off with a double. For Flores, it was his sixth long ball of the season and the Slammers took a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Casey Rodrigue extended his hitting streak to five games with a triple to center field. Later in the inning, Ryan Bottger drove him home with a single, bringing the Bums within one.
Alfredo Rodriguez led off the top of the third with a single then stole second. He would score on a Flores RBI sacrifice fly and Joliet were, once again, up by two. With a wind blowing from left to right, Jose Vargas slammed a solo homer through the breeze, and over the left field wall for his third of the season to get the Bums closer at 3-2.
Designated hitter Brian Portelli, led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right. Kendall Patrick followed by getting hit by a pitch, then Jeff DeBlieux hit an infield single to load the bases. Two batters later, Steven Patterson walked, driving in Portelli, and tying the game.
Joliet responded right away in the fifth when Alfredo Rodriguez singled with one out. Boo Vazquez moved him to third with a single to center then Carter Bell drove him home on a groundout. In top of the seventh, the Slammers took their second two-run lead when Nico Zych, who led off the inning with a grounds-rule double, scored on an Alfredo Rodriguez sacrifice fly.
After the stretch, Vargas led off by legging out an infield hit. Will Kengor followed with a walk, and two batters later, pinch hitter Tyler Peterson walked to load the bases. Portelli stepped to the dish and whistled a single to left, driving in both Vargas and Kengor, tying the game at five.
After a scoreless eighth inning, and with one out in the ninth, Charlie White walked. He immediately stole second then Alfredo Rodriguez hit a hard grounder to first. Brandon Thomasson couldn't handle it cleanly and there were runners on the corners. Boo Vazquez drove in White with a groundout and the Slammers had the lead again. Although the Bums got the tying run on base, this time, they could not get the comeback.
Joliet's Brent Choban, although he gave up the Portelli double that tied the game at five, gets the win, improving to 3-3. Luke Barker hurled a solid 2 1/3 innings in relief for the Bums but gave up the winning run in the ninth. He drops to 0-2. Kevin McNorton nabbed his sixth save of the season, facing four batters in the ninth and allowing a hit.
