Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners split a doubleheader on Sunday at CarShield Field in O'Fallon with the River City Rascals, receiving late offense and a complete-game, one-hit shutout from Dyllon Nuernberg in the first game, won 5-0 for the team's eighth win in a row overall, before falling 6-1 in the second game.
The first contest was a pitcher's duel almost the entire way as Nuernberg (2-0) held the Rascals without a hit until the sixth inning while River City starter Zeb Sneed matched him by holding the Miners off the board until the top of the seventh. But it was then that Southern Illinois would take control of the contest for good. Nolan Earley led off with a single that chased Sneed from the game. Against reliever Reese Gregory, Steve Marino worked a walk to put men at first and second. Shane Kennedy then laid down a bunt in front of the plate that the pitcher Gregory fielded and threw wide of first base, allowing Earley to come home and score to make it 1-0 Miners.
After another pitching change and a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Toby DeMello chopped a two-run single down the third base line for a 3-0 lead followed by a wild pitch and another RBI hit, a single by Aaron Gates for a 4-0 advantage. Craig Massey would add a sacrifice fly for the final margin as Nuernberg finished what he started, needing just 70 pitches to blank the Rascals in game one, the Miners' fourth shutout win of 2016.
In game two, right-hander Brooks Trujillo made his professional debut and the game also began in a similar pitcher's duel fashion, with neither side managing a run through the first three innings. With two outs and two on in the fourth, however, River City would break through for two runs following an error by Marino. With the score 2-0, Southern Illinois got one back on an RBI double in the fifth by Francisco Rosario, making it a 2-1 ballgame.
Trujillo departed the following inning after walking the leadoff batter, and back-to-back homers off Evan Mott by Alexi Colon and Kyle Gaedele made the score 5-1 River City. They would tack on a run without a hit in the sixth for the final margin.
After going 6-1 on their road trip, the Miners will return home as winners of nine of their last 11 games overall on Tuesday night to begin a six-game homestand at Rent One Park at 7:05 p.m. against the Florence Freedom. Josh Kimborowicz will take the ball in the series opener for the Miners.
