Washington Completes Sweep in 6-1 Victory over Grizzlies

SAUGET, IL-The Washington Wild Things completed the series sweep against Gateway on Sunday May 31, defeating the Grizzlies on their home turf by a final score of 6-1.

Washington starter Matt Sergey earned the win for the Wild Things, and did so in impressive fashion. Sergey struck out 10 Grizzlies in his six-inning performance while allowing just three hits. JaVaun West suffered the loss for Gateway.

Sam Mende opened up the scoring for Washington by hitting a single up the middle that scored Danny Poma in the top of the fourth. CJ Beatty added another run in the sixth inning with a base knock of his own to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Gateway eliminated the chances of a shutout when Ben Waldrip knocked an RBI single to inch the Grizzlies within one in the bottom of the sixth. David Popkins retaliated with a three-run home run, his fifth blast of the season, in the top of the eighth to boost the score to 5-1.

Jeudy Valdez added some security in the top of the ninth inning with a solo shot of his own. Tyler Wilson closed out the game to give the Wild Things a 6-1 victory.

The Wild Things will return Washington, Pa on Wednesday, June 3 for a home series against the Rockford Aviators, beginning with a scheduled doubleheader.
