Slammers Give up Early Runs in Loss

Marion,IL- The Southern Illinois Miners (11-4) scored in each of the first five innings against the Joliet Slammers (6-9) on their way to 7-4 victory in game two of their doubleheader on Sunday night.

The Miners raced out to a quick start against pitcher Jordan Guth. CF Aaron Gates led off with a walk. 2B Frank Martinez flew out to left field, but the throw back to second base was offline, allowing Gates to advance to second. He would later score on a DH Wendell Fairley single giving the Miners a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Southern Illinois scored another run in the second. 1B Jared Sabourin led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground ball to the right side of the infield. He would later score on a double by C Brendan Slattery. The Miners led 2-0 after the second.

Joliet answered with a run in the third inning. LF Phil Bates led off with a double up the left-field line. C Dante Rosenberg moved him to third, and 2B Max Casper drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left. The Miners got that run back in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 after three innings.

The Miners extended their lead to 6-1 with a three-run fourth inning. With the momentum going the Miners' way, Rosenberg sparked the Slammers in the fifth. He led off with a long home run to left field, to make it a four-run game.

The Miners scored a run in the fifth off pitcher Adam Giacalone. With one out LF Jon Minucci and Slatery singled. With to aboard, Gates cracked a single up the middle to plate Minucci, extending the Miners lead to 7-2.

Joliet responded with two runs in the sixth. 3B Mike Garza reached on an infield single, and with two outs Alfredo Rodriguez reached with a base-knock as well. Bates walked to load the bases, and Rosenberg drove in a pair with a single. He was thrown out, however trying to turn his single into a double, ending the Slammers threat in the sixth.

Joliet threatened to score in the seventh and final inning against pitch Will Rankin. CF JD Williams walked and RF Nate Roberts doubled with one out. Representing the tying run, Garza popped out to first and DH Russell Moldenhauer grounded out to second, ending the Slammers threat. Guth took the loss (2-2) and Eric Green (2-0) earned the win in relief for Southern Illinois. The Slammers are off on Monday before hosting the Frontier Greys on Tuesday, June 2nd. The game will be broadcasted live on SlammerVision starting at 7:05pm C.T.
