Washington Beats Gateway to End Homestand

SAUGET, Ill. -- The Gateway Grizzlies' bats fell quiet Sunday afternoon in a 6-1 loss to the Washington Wild Things at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies (4-12) were limited to three base hits in the defeat. The Wild Things (7-8) completed a three-game sweep with the victory and have now won five straight games.
Gateway starter JaVaun West (2-1) didn't allow a hit through three innings, but ran into his first bit of trouble in the fourth. Daniel Poma doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a groundball with one out. Washington cleanup hitter Sam Mende then knocked an RBI single to centerfield to score Puma and give the Wild Things a 1-0 lead.
Poma got things going for the Wild Things once again in the sixth inning. He doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, CJ Beatty, singled to right field on the first pitch he saw to score Poma and extend Washington's lead to 2-0.
The Gateway offense struggled all afternoon, but strung together two of their three hits in the bottom half of the sixth. Madison Beaird doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on Ryan Soares' second hit of the game. After a one-out walk to Blake Brown loaded the bases, Beaird scored Gateway's only run on an RBI groundout by Ben Waldrip.
West allowed just two earned runs through seven innings, but made a costly mistake in the eighth. Back-to-back singles by Austin Wobrock and Poma started the inning. David Popkins then launched a pitch over the right field fence to secure the victory and the sweep for Washington. Back-to-back walks started the ninth inning for the Grizzlies, but the offense could never capitalize.
Matt Sergey (1-2) allowed three hits and one run in six innings of work to earn the victory. His 10 strikeouts matched a career-high.
Gateaway will get two days off before heading to Evansville for a three-game series with the Otters. The series will begin Wednesday with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
