Warthogs win in rain shortened game

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winston-Salem Warthogs (24-17) won a rain shortened game, 3-1 with Kinston Saturday night. The game was called with the bases loaded for the Warthogs and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Warthogs now find themselves 4 ½ games ahead of the Indians in the southern division of the Carolina League. Kris Honel improved to 5-3 for Winston-Salem. Honel gave up one run on three hits in five innings. Jim Ed Warden dropped to 0-2 for Kinston. Warden gave up three runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Kinston took the lead 1-0 in the third. Honel walked Brian Wright and Brian Kirby with one out. Pat Osborne then singled home Wright from second base.

The Warthogs took the lead with a two run bottom of the third. Chris Stewart had a infield single and Normand Martel walked. Ruddy Yan had an infield single to load the bases. Mike Spidale then hit into a double play scoring Stewart from third. With Martel at third, Jeremy then had an RBI infield single. Martel hit his first homerun out to right to end the scoring in the fifth.

The final game of the three game series will be Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. The Indians will toss RHP Travis Foley (2-3, 4.30). RHP Kris McWhirter (0-2, 2.78) will toss for the Warthogs. The play by play will be heard on 600/1200 WSJS.
