Pelicans Pull Off Sweep Over Wilmington

Myrtle Beach, SC--- The red-hot Myrtle Beach Pelicans wrapped up a three-game series sweep over the Wilmington Blue Rocks with a 7-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Coastal Federal Field.

Matt Coenen (1-2), Paul Push, and Alex Zumwalt combined on a three-hit shutout win. Sunday's victory was the ninth straight for the Pelicans and their fifth in a row against Wilmington.

The Rocks, who started off their seven-game road trip with four straight wins in Kinston, return home with a three-game losing streak.

Zach McClellan (2-1) allowed five earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Andy Marte, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, drilled a leadoff home run in the second inning to give Myrtle Beach the lead.

Jose Salas followed two hitters later and smacked his first home run of the season over the right-field wall, giving the Pelicans a two-run lead.

Coenen, who made his first start of the year against Wilmington, tossed six innings of two-hit shutout baseball in picking up his first win of the season. He walked three and fanned six.

Scott Walter had the only two hits, both singles, against Coenen over the first six innings. Walter has hit safely in eight in a row and 10 of his last 11 games.

McClellan gave up a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth before giving way to Eduardo Villacis.

Myrtle Beach added two more runs against Villacis in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Salas, who finished with three RBIs on the day.

Paul Bush and Alec Zumwalt combined to work three scoreless innings out of the pen. Zumwalt gave up a leadoff single to Trey Dyson in the ninth inning and retired the next three hitters.

Dyson went 1-for-4 and has hit safely in eight in a row and 16 of his last 18 games.

Game Notes: The Rocks have been shutout twice this season and both have come against Myrtle Beach.

Villacis and Mike Natale combined to retire the final eight hitters.

The Pelicans pounded out 10 hits on Sunday, including five doubles and two home runs. Myrtle Beach hit four home runs in the series, all solo shots.

Villacis has inherited 12 runners this season, including one on Sunday and only one has come into score.

The Rocks return home and begin a six-game home stand on Tuesday with the first of three against the Potomac Cannons. Zack Greinke (6-0, 1.20) ERA makes his ninth start of the season and his second against the Cannons.

Potomac was rained out on Sunday in Salem. They enter the series on Tuesday with a 15-26 record. The Cannons have lost seven of eight and eight of 11.
