Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After 53 years as the home of professional baseball in Winston-Salem, Ernie Shore Field saved a little magic for the final night as the Warthogs swept the Kinston Indians by matching 3-1 scores on Thursday evening. With the pair of victories, Winston-Salem all but ensures a spot in the playoffs as they reduced their magic number to one with four games to play.
The first game was a continuation from Wednesday night, which was suspended with no score in the top of the third inning. Scheduled for seven innings, Kinston took advantage of an error to score the games first run in the fourth. After Carlos Rivero singled with one out, Jared Head lined a single to right field that was bobbled by Salvador Sanchez. Rivero moved to third on the error and scored on a Johnny Drennen ground ball out.
The Warthogs scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with one out against Sung-Wei Tseng. Sanchez knotted the score with an RBI sac fly and a passed ball scored John Shelby III from third to put Winston-Salem in front 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Greg Paiml led off with a triple off Josh Judy and scored on a Dale Mollenhauer sac fly to give the Warthogs a 3-1 lead. A pair of hurlers made the score stand as Ricky Brooks (4-3) tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits to collect the win.
Michael Dubee went the final two frames and did not allow a hit while striking out three to garner his first save of the season. Tseng (0-9) took the loss after surrendering two runs on one hit in 1 1/3 innings on the mound.
In the nightcap, Kinston broke up a scoreless pitcher's duel with a run in the sixth inning off Matt Long. Nick Weglarz reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Carlos Rivero to hand the Indians a 1-0 lead.
The Warthogs responded in the bottom of the inning as Dale Mollenhauer reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a C.J. Retherford base hit. With one out, John Shelby III hit into a fielder's choice and beat out the relay throw at first base on the double play attempt. On the play, Mollenhauer came around from second base to tie the score.
Winston-Salem scored the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning off Kinston reliever Matt Meyer. Retherford and Shelby smacked singles to put runners on the corners with one out. Pinch-hitter Brett Bonvechio hit a bouncer over the mound that brought Retherford home with what would result in the winning run. Sanchez followed with an RBI single to finalize the scoring.
Matt Davis tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, while Meyer (4-2) suffered the loss.
The Warthogs conclude the regular season with a four-game series at Frederick over the weekend. In the opener on Friday night, Winston-Salem will send RHP John Ely (9-12, 4.68) to the mound. The Keys will turn to RHP Tim Bascom (6-5, 5.93) with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
