Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - The Potomac Nationals refused to let mother nature rain on their hit parade, defeating the Salem Avalanche 8-4 in the final home game of the regular season. Dee Brown finished with five RBIs, and was a homerun short of the cycle in pacing the P-Nats.

After steady rain fell throughout the night on Wednesday and into the morning on Thursday, the Nationals arrived at Pfitzner Stadium unsure if they would play. The offense started fast however, scoring all eight runs in the first four frames. Brown hit an RBI triple in the first that drove in Michael Martinez and Andrew Lefave and Jhonatan Solano added a solo shot to left in the second to put the P-Nats up 3-0 early.

And then the rains came.

Umpire Jon Saphire called for the tarp and the teams endured an hour and seven-minute rain delay before resuming play in the top of the third. The Avalanche got three runs off of starter Erik Arnesen in the next two innings, but Brown again responded with a run scored in the third inning and a bases-clearing triple in the fourth that plated three runs and all but put the game out of reach at 8-3.

Martin Beno, Atahualpa Severino, and Josh Wilkie combined to pitch four innings of three hit ball out of the Nationals' bullpen, allowing just a solo home run in the seventh, to ensure the victory despite a four-hit night from Avalanche shortstop Tim Torres.

Salem starter Sergio Severino entered Thursday's contest with a 7.11 ERA and left with a 7.66 ERA after he only lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits to drop to 1-6 on the year. On the other side of the field, Arnesen was able to get out of trouble in the third and fourth innings to go five solid frames, allowing three runs, two earned, to improve to 4-3.

Potomac continues play tomorrow when they begin a four-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium. The series is the final regular season series of the year before the playoffs begin on September 3. Left-hander Ross Detwiler (7-8, 5.03) is slated to start the first contest for the Nationals with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
