Kinston Indians News Release
The K-Tribe's playoff hopes took a big shot to the gut, as Kinston dropped two games to Winston-Salem Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. The K-Tribe lost both games by the score of 3-1. Winston-Salem has now whittled down their magic number of clinching the Southern Division Wild Card spot to one, with four games to play. A Winston-Salem win at Frederick or a Kinston loss at Myrtle Beach over the next four games would eliminate Kinston from playoff contention.
The K-Tribe dropped game one to Winston-Salem 3-1. The two teams picked up the suspended game in the top of the third with the score tied at zero. The K-Tribe struck first as Carlos Rivero and Jerad Head smacked one out singles off of former East Carolina Pirate turned Winston-Salem Warthog pitcher Ricky Brooks in the top of the fourth. Johnny Drennen delivered an RBI ground out that scored Rivero and gave Kinston a 1-0 lead. The Warthogs came back in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases off of K-Tribe pitcher Sung-Wei Tseng with a single, hit batter and a walk. Tseng was replaced on the hill by K-Tribe reliever Josh Judy who gave up a sacrifice fly to Salvador Sanchez.. With the score tied at one, John Shelby scored one batter later when a pitch got away from Kinston catcher Alex Castillo. Castillo was saddled with a passed ball as Shelby scored from third base, giving Winston-Salem a 2-1 lead. The Warthogs added another run in the fifth inning when another former ECU Pirate, Dale Mollenhauer, drove in Greg Paiml with a sacrifice fly. Tseng (0-8) picked up the loss for Kinston, Brooks (4-3) was the winner for Winston-Salem.
In game two, Kinston got a great start from ace Hector Rondon. Rondon no-hit Winston-Salem into the fifth inning until Joe Persichina broke it up with a double. Kinston got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI double from Carlos Rivero, scoring Nick Weglarz, to take a 1-0 lead. Winston-Salem would get to Rondon in the sixth, when former ECU Pirate Dale Mollenhauer led off the inning on a drag bunt. He would score later in the inning on a ground ball from John Shelby. The Warthogs took the lead in the bottom of the eight inning when C.J. Retherford banged a single off of K-Tribe reliever Matt Meyer. After Ronnie Gaines bunted Rutherford to second base, an infield single by Shelby moved runners to the corners. A high chopper off of the bat of Brett Bonvechio was recorded for an out, but brought Rutherford home from third for the go ahead run. Meyer (4-2) is the tough luck loser, giving up four hits and two earned runs in two innings. Former Cleveland farmhand Matt Davis (4-1) picks up the win for Winston-Salem.
Kinston travels to Myrtle Beach for the final four games of the regular season. The series begins on Friday at 7:05pm.
