Warthogs offense non-existent in pair of defeats

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Winston-Salem Warthogs road woes continued as Potomac swept a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Nationals rolled to a 7-1 win in the opener before claiming the nightcap by a 4-1 score. The Warthogs dropped to 7-24 on the road this season including a 0-6 record at Potomac. In the six losses at Pfitzner Stadium, Winston-Salem has only managed seven runs of offense.
The opener of the twinbill was a continuation of Tuesday night's game, which was suspended due to rain after three scoreless innings. When the game resumed, Chris Marrero gave Potomac a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run home run off Matt Long.
The Nationals extended their lead with three runs in the seventh when Long struggled with his control. Dee Brown and Marvin Lowrance were issued back-to-back walks to start the inning. Brian Peacock followed with a two-run double to put Potomac in front 4-0. Peacock moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Francisco Plasencia.
Potomac added a pair of runs in the eighth inning against Warthogs reliever Matt Davis as Brown and Lowrance tallied RBI singles. Winston-Salem avoided the shutout when Greg Paiml lined an RBI single up the middle to score Billy Killian with two-outs in the ninth inning.
Clint Everts (1-0) was on the mound for Potomac when the game resumed and garnered the win while tossing three shutout innings. Long (3-8) surrendered five runs in four innings of work to take the lass for the Warthogs.
In the nightcap, Brandon Allen crushed a solo home run off Craig Stammen in the first inning to give the Warthogs an early lead. Winston-Salem had an opportunity to extend their lead when they loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning, but Stammen was able to wiggle out of trouble without allowing a run to score.
The lack of runs came back to haunt the Warthogs as Potomac scored four runs off Ryan Rote in the sixth inning. Edgardo Baez gave the Nationals the lead with a two run double and Marvin Lowrance followed with a two-run home run to give Potomac a 4-1 advantage.
Winston-Salem wasted a solid start from Jacob Rasner, who tossed five shutout innings and limited Potomac to two hits with six strikeouts. Stammen (2-3), who was recently named to the Carolina League All-star team, held the Warthogs to one run on five hits in six innings to earn the win. Martin Beno recorded the final three outs to collect his second save of the season.
The Warthogs will continue their week-long road trip when they travel to Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware for a four-game set against the Blue Rocks. The series opener is Thursday night with RHP John Ely (2-6, 4.02) taking the mound for the Warthogs. The Blue Rocks will hand the ball to RHP Ed Cegarra (2-1, 5.79). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
