Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans look for their 14th series victory of the season as they play the series finale against the Lynchburg Hillcats. A win tonight would also equal the Pelicans 1st half franchise wins record of 43 set back in 2002. The Pelicans hold a 5-3 series edge over the Hillcats. Last night, the Pelicans returned to championship form with a dominating 11-3 victory over the Hillcats to square the seriers at one game apiece. The Pelicans plated five runs in the fourth and four runs in the seventh to run away from the Cats. It was the fourth time this season that the Pelicans scored double-digit runs in a game. Concepcion Rodriguez led the Pelicans offense with his first three hit game of the season.
Reynoso: A member of the 2008 Carolina League All-Star team, he has earned wins in each of his last three starts. In his last start (6/6 @ KIN), he went six innings and allowed seven hits and four runs (3 ER). Reynoso has posted a solid strikeout to walk ratio of 55:17. Has preformed well with runners in scoring position and two outs, where opponents are hitting just .095 (2-21). In 63.0 total innings, he has surrendered 56 hits and 28 runs (23 ER). Reynoso is 11th in the league in strikeouts. Reynoso is also tied for third in the Carolina League in wins with six.
The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.
Watson: Has been hit hard by the Carolina League this season as evident by their .314 batting average against him. In 63.2 total innings, he has allowed 80 hits and 36 runs. Watson has allowed 10 home runs, which is tied for the most allowed in the league with Brandon Erbe of Frederick. In his last start (6/6 @ SAL) he went 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs in a losing effort. His last win came over a month ago on May 5th. His seven loses are tied for the most in the league with David Qualben (SAL), Matthew Long (WSW) and Jared Hughes (LYN).
The Sioux City, IA native was drafted in the ninth round of the 2007 draft by the Pirates. He played collegiately at the University of Nebraska. In his first professional season, he went 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA for the State College Spikes. He was named to the NYPL All-Star team.
MEJIA STREAKING AGAIN: Pelicans first baseman Ernesto Mejia is at it again. This time he has reached base in 27 consecutive games. His streak began on May 14th and continued last night with a 2-4 night against the K-Tribe. The longest on-base streak in the Carolina League this season was John Drennen's (KIN) 32 game on base streak, which started late last season (8/22/07) and ended this season on May 8th. Mejia is also riding an 13-game hitting streak into tonight's game against the Hillcats.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING: The Pelicans (42-23) are one victory shy of equaling the franchise record for wins in the first half (43), which was established in 2002. The birds have six games remaining in their first half schedule to try to match or break the record.
CABRERA CRUISING: Pelicans left fielder Willie Cabrera is currently riding a season-long 12-game hitting streak. During the stretch, he is 21-47 (.446) with 14 runs scored and six RBIs. He has increased his batting average from .245-.277.
ALL-STAR BOUND: No team in the California or Carolina League will have more representatives at BB&T Coastal Field for the 2008 All-Star Game than the Pelicans, who have six. Deunte Heath, Travis Jones, Brandon Hicks, Ryne Reynoso, Bryan Dumesnil and Ernesto Mejia will showcase their talents on June 24th.
