Warthogs Fall 7-5 to Kinston in Sloppy Afternoon Affair

KINSTON, NC - In a terribly played afternoon affair at Grainger Stadium, Kinston took game two of the series with a 7-5 win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs on Sunday afternoon. The Indians were charged with six errors, but the lone defensive mistake by the Warthogs proved most costly as it allowed Kinston to plate four runs in the decisive third inning. Nine of the 12 runs scored in the game were unearned including all five by Winston-Salem.
The Indians struck for a pair of runs in the first as Warthogs starting pitcher Clevelan Santeliz put runners on first and third courtesy of two walks. With two outs in the inning, Niuman Romero lined a double down the left field line that scored both runners to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. Romero's double extended his hitting streak to 18 games, which ties him with Willie Cabrera of Myrtle Beach for the longest of the season in the Carolina League.
The Warthogs took a brief lead with three runs in the third inning thanks to three Kinston errors. After C.J. Lang reached on an error and was caught stealing, Paulo Orlando got to second base on a bunt attempt that was thrown away by Kinston starter Shawn Nottingham. Orlando stole third and C.J. Retherford was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with two away. John Shelby III hit a pop fly that was dropped by Kinston second baseman Cristo Arnal. It was the third error of the inning and allowed Orlando to score. Next, Salvador Sanchez hit a two-run double to give the Warthogs a 3-2 lead.
A crucial Warthogs error led to four unearned runs in the third inning for Kinston. With two outs and a runner on first, Jared Goedart hit a grounder that was misplayed by Warthogs third baseman C.J. Retherford, which kept the inning alive for the Indians. Next, Romero smacked a double into the right field corner to bring one run across to knot the game at three. Jason Denham followed with a three-run blast off Santeliz to hand the Indians a 6-3 lead. Kinston would tack on a run in the fourth thanks to a solo shot from Alex Castillo.
Winston-Salem put another unearned run on the board in the eighth inning when Salvador Sanchez struck out swinging on a ball in the dirt. Kinston catcher Alex Castillo could not glove the ball cleanly and tried retiring Sanchez at first, but his high throw ended up in the right field corner. Another error on the play allowed Sanchez to move all the way to third base. Adam Ricks followed with an RBI ground out to trim Kinston's lead to 7-4. Another Indians error allowed C.J. Retherford to reach safely in the ninth inning and John Shelby III drove him in with an RBI double to finalize the scoring at 7-5.
Nottingham (1-1) garnered his first win of the season for Kinston after pitching five innings. The southpaw allowed three unearned runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Vinnie Pestano allowed an unearned run in the ninth, but preserved the win to collect his first save of the season. Santeliz (2-3) took the loss for the Warthogs after surrendering seven runs (three earned) on five hits. He also walked three and struck out three.
The third of this four-game series is scheduled for Monday night at Grainger Stadium. Winston-Salem is expected to start RHP Bobby Jenks (0-0, 0.00), who is making a rehab appearance with the Warthogs. RHP Anthony Carter (2-2, 6.54) is expected to take over after Jenks departure. Kinston will hand the ball to RHP Jeanmar Gomez (3-7, 5.74). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
