WOODBRIDGE, Va.- The Washington Nationals have announced that star third baseman Ryan Zimmerman will make two rehab starts with the Potomac Nationals. The 23-year-old will join the team in Salem, Va., and appear in Monday and Tuesday's contests against the Salem Avalanche.

The former University of Virginia standout has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a labral tear in his left shoulder. He suffered the injury sliding into second base on May 18 against the Baltimore Orioles. Zimmerman is expected to play four games with Triple-A Columbus Thursday through Sunday.

After hitting a walk-off home run against the Atlanta Braves in the inaugural game at Nationals Park, Zimmerman saw his average dip as low as .191 during the first month of the season. He bounced back in May hitting .289 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 22 games and was in the midst of a nine-game hit streak prior to being placed on the DL. The Virginia Beach native has not played in a game since May 25 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

In his first full season in the Major Leagues in 2006, Zimmerman lived up to his star-status batting .287 with 20 home runs and 110 RBI. Last season he played in all 162 games, hitting .266 with a career-best 24 home runs and driving in 91 runs.

The rehab outing will mark Zimmerman's first stint with the Potomac Nationals. The former first-round pick began his professional career with the Low-A Savannah Sand Gnats, led by current P-Nats manager Randy Knorr, hitting .471 with two home runs and six RBI in just four games. Zimmerman jumped to Double-A Harrisburg where he hit .326 with nine home runs and 32 RBI in 63 games before getting a September call-up to Washington.

Zimmerman becomes the eighth member of the Washington Nationals to rehab with Potomac this season joining Shawn Hill, Paul Lo Duca, Elijah Dukes, Odalis Perez, Ronnie Belliard, and Ryan Wagner who is also currently rehabbing with the P-Nats.

Both games are scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.
