Warthogs Crusie to 7-3 Win Over Wilmington in Series Finale

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem took an early lead and cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs jumped in front 5-1 after two innings and rode another strong start from Michael Dubee in taking three of the four from the Blue Rocks over the weekend.

Wilmington got off to a quick start against Dubee (3-1) as Derrick Robinson led off the game with a triple and scored when Chris McConnell followed with an RBI double to give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead. The Blue Rocks lead evaporated in the bottom of the first inning when the Warthogs tallied three runs off Wilmington hurler Matt Kniginyzky (0-3). Paulo Orlando doubled and John Shelby III singled to put runners on the corners to start the at-bat. After Javier Colina hit into a double play to bring the tying run across the plate, Salvador Sanchez and Lee Cruz collected run producing hits with two outs to give Winston-Salem a 3-1 lead.

The Warthogs extended their advantage to 5-1 when Orlando smashed a two-run home run in the second inning. It was Orlando's first home run of the season. Wilmington cut their deficit in half when Miguel Vega lifted a two-run home run over the right field wall in the seventh inning. Winston-Salem answered immediately with a pair of runs off Blue Rocks reliever Henry Barrera in its half of the seventh inning on an RBI triple by Sanchez and an RBI double by Lee Cruz in consecutive at-bats.

Dubee held the Blue Rocks bats in check tossing seven innings and limiting Wilmington to three runs on nine hits to earn the win. Ryan Rote and Kanekoa Texeira each worked a scoreless frame to preserve the win as Winston-Salem improved their record at Ernie Shore Field to 11-6.

The Warthogs look to improve upon their early season road woes when they travel to Lynchburg for a three-game series starting on Monday. In the opener, Winston-Salem will send RHP John Ely (0-3, 2.61) to the mound. The Hillcats will counter with LHP Tony Watson (2-3, 3.07). The first pitch for all three games at Calvin Fallwell Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
