TODAY: The Potomac Nationals and Frederick Keys meet in the finale of a four-game series...The Keys scored nine runs in the first three innings and held on for a 10-6 victory over the P-Nats last night...Potomac has a 3 1/2 game lead over Frederick in the Carolina League Northern Division coming into play today.
TODAY'S STARTER: Former first-round pick Ross Detwiler who is looking for a strong start today after Potomac's previous two starters did not make it past the second inning...The 22-year-old battled with commond through his five innings on the mound in game two of Tuesday night's doubleheader, allowing two runs on six hits while walking four...Detwiler has walked 10 batters in his last 9 2/3 innings on the mound...In his career at Pfitzner Stadium, Detwiler is 0-2 with an 7.52 ERA in five starts (17R/17ER in 20 2/3 IP)...In four career starts on the road, the Missouri State product is 2-1 with a 1.97 ERA (4R/3ER in 13 2/3 IP)...His last start during the day was against Winston-Salem on April 23 and he lasted on 2/3 of an inning after giving up two runs on three hits and was pulled due to pitch count (40).
IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED: The Potomac Nationals five-game winning streak came to an end with last night's loss to Frederick...It was the first loss for the club on its seven-game homestand...The P-Nats offense has scored a combined 12 runs on 22 hits in two games...Potomac had only 17 hits (4.25 per game) through the first four games of the current seven-
game homestand.
PITCHING PICKLE: Last night the Potomac Nationals pitching staff allowed season-highs in total runs allowed (10), runs allowed in an inning (6), batters faced in an inning (11), and Terrence Engles allowed the most runs by a starter this season (7)...Potomac's staff ERA rose from 2.35 to 2.49; however, the club still has the lowest staff ERA in the Carolina League...The P-Nats starters have totaled only four innings pitched in the last two games, allowing nine runs, six earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks...Six of Fredericks' 13 hits went for extra bases...The four-run defeat was matches the largest suffered by the P-Nats equalling the 6-2 loss in Frederick last Sunday.
DAVIS KEYED IN: Leonard Davis is having a fantastic series against the Frederick Keys...In the three games played thus far, the Potomac third baseman is 7-for-13 (.538) with a home run, two doubles, three RBI, and four runs scored...The 24-year-old has raised his overall batting average from .233 to .326 in the series and has matched Frederick catcher Matt Wieters for the league lead in home runs with five, doing it in 41 few at-bats.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 24th consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead after moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
HELLO: Right-hander Chris Lugo who has been promoted from Extended Spring Training. Lugo spent all of 2007 with Low-Hagerstown appearing in 41 games, which were third most on the team. The 21-year-old went 2-5 with a 5.38 ERA. He allowed 60 runs, 52 earned, on 100 hits in 87 innings pitched, striking out 60 and walking 32.
A former 28th-round selection in the 2004 by the Montreal Expos, Lugo owns a career 9-12 record with a 3.74 ERA in four professional seasons. The North Carolina-native was named a NY-Penn League All-Star in 2006 after going 1-4 with a 2.54 ERA and striking out 33 batters in 39 innings.
GOODBYE: Steve Doetsch was sent down to Extended Spring Training to apparently work on converting from on outfielder to a pitcher. The 24-year-old, who signed as a free agent with the Washington Nationals this past offseason, was hitting .083 with no home runs and two RBI in 11 games with the P-Nats.
