Warriors Look for Redemption in Rematch with ICE
October 23, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors will be looking to redeem themselves when they face-off with the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday night at Mosaic Place.
The Warriors opened their home-and-home against the ICE with a rough outing in Winnipeg on Wednesday, falling 10-2 in a game the team will try to put in the rearview mirror during the rematch.
"We've done our best to put the past behind us, but at the same time, you don't want to completely forget," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "It's embarrassing, it's hard to wake up the next morning, it's hard to walk around town after losing 10-2, so we're looking forward to the opportunity to get back up quick."
Wednesday's matchup was a one-goal game heading into the third period, but Winnipeg ending up tagging Moose Jaw for seven goals, including four power play markers and a shorthanded goal, in the final 20 minutes to skate to the lopsided win.
Warriors forward Brayden Yager said the team needs to play a more complete game going into Saturday's meeting.
"We had a solid first two periods and obviously we can be better in the third period, maybe a little bit more disciplined, we had a lot of penalties, so we can touch down on the penalties a little bit, it will be good," he said.
Penalties were the biggest issue for the Warriors in the third as they found themselves on a 5-on-3 twice and also had a five-minute major.
O'Leary said he'd like to see the team limit their penalties to three or less each game.
"We can kill penalties, three of them at a time and that's fine, but when we get into five, six or even nine then you're asking for trouble," he said.
"Our penalty kill, which was an area that we wanted to clean up, it did a really good job through two periods, but again in the third period, you give a good team like that as many opportunities as we did, it ends up biting you."
The ICE remain the only undefeated team in the Western Hockey League and showed their dangerousness in Wednesday's win.
O'Leary said the Warriors need to find a way to slow down Winnipeg to come away with two points.
"We seen it live and then we saw it again on video, how fast the transition can come the other way, so managing the puck properly, but if we're hounding pucks and playing on the right side of it, we give ourselves a chance," he said.
"It starts in the offensive zone by the choices you make there, number one to make sure you have depth and we're climbing above the puck, making sure that they have to go through five guys before they get to our end."
The Warriors and ICE face off at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at Mosaic Place. Tickets for the game are available online at mjwarriors.ca or in person at the box office inside Mosaic Place.
