Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
It wasn't the end to the weekend that the Moose Jaw Warriors had hoped for as they were stifled by the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday night at Mosaic Place.
Lethbridge scored three unanswered goals to skate to a 5-2 win over Moose Jaw.
"It's pretty frustrating, Lethbridge plays a hard game, a trap game," Warriors forward Ryder Korczak said.
"It's definitely hard, but you've got to keep with it, bounces are going to go your way sometime, so we just need to stick with the process."
The Hurricanes clamped down defensively on the Warriors, limiting the team's time and space to create plays throughout the night.
"They competed real hard and made it hard on us creating anything," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said. "We had some pretty good looks throughout the game, but their goaltender was good and they don't allow a lot of second, third chances."
Lethbridge jumped out to an early lead when Corson Hopwo buried a rebound in front just 4:52 into the game.
Kade Nolan added to the lead when he was credited with a goal that bounced in off a Warriors' defender.
Moose Jaw responded quickly to that goal and cut the lead back down to one just 1:06 later when Jagger Firkus collected a rebound in front and scored his team-leading 32nd goal of the season.
The Warriors started the second period on the penalty kill, but capitalized when Brayden Yager created a turnover in his own zone, burst up the wing and snapped home his 29th of the season just 1:02 into the period.
The goal tied Yager with Warriors legend Theo Fleury for the most in franchise history by a 16-year-old.
The tie game didn't last long though as Yegor Klavdiev broke in for the Hurricanes only 2:23 later and restored the lead.
Lethbridge extended its lead to 4-2 heading into the third when Justin Hall scored a shorthanded marker with 6:26 left in the middle frame.
The Hurricanes sealed the win early in the third period on a power play goal from Brayden Edwards.
"To their credit, they played a good game and we just weren't good enough," Korczak said.
The Hurricanes outshot the Warriors 39-31 on the night.
Jackson Unger allowed four goals on 22 shots, while Carl Tetachuk finished the night, stopping 16 of 17 shots in relief.
The Warriors went 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Moose Jaw will now hit the road for games on Tuesday and Wednesday in Manitoba. They travel to Brandon to battle the Wheat Kings on Tuesday and then face the ICE in Winnipeg on Wednesday.
The Warriors are back on home ice to host the Regina Pats for Snowbirds Night on Saturday, Mar. 19.
