Hughes' Hat Trick Propels Chiefs to 6-1 Win over Tri-City

Spokane, Wash. - Team captain and Washington Capitals prospect Bear Hughes scored his first career hat trick and piled up a career-best six points in a 6-1 trouncing of the rival Tri-City Americans on Saturday night at Spokane Arena.

Carter Streek opened the scoring for Spokane, chipping away a loose puck in the neutral zone to create a breakaway chance at 17:47 of the opening frame. The goal, Streek's third in four games, gave Hughes his 100th career WHL point with an assist.

Hughes added to the lead just 54 seconds into the second period, curling around the left circle before sniping a perfect shot past the screened goaltender to make it 2-0, with an assist to Streek.

The Americans answered at 6:08 of the middle frame when veteran winger Connor Bouchard chipped the puck up and over Mason Beaupit's shoulder off a great behind-the-net feed from linemate Petr Moravec.

The Chiefs pushed their lead back to two goals with 3:39 left in the second when Blake Swetlikoff deflected a Nick McCarry slap pass into the net for his 10th of the season. The power play goal added to an offensive resurgence for Swetlikoff, who now has six points in his last five games.

The third period was all Spokane as Yannick Proske picked up his ninth of the year before back-to-back Hughes goals to close the scoring. Ty Cheveldayoff fed the captain with a centering feed from behind the goal line at 7:29, then Streek picked up his fourth point of the night with an assist on the hat trick at 10:18.

Beaupit finished the game 26-for-27 as the NHL prospect continues to climb draft boards. Spokane went 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs wore special St. Patrick's Day green and white jerseys for the game which were auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting Big Table Spokane. Related Links
