Warriors Fight off Vipers in Showcase Shootout

RENO, NEV., Jan. 9, 2014 - The Santa Cruz Warriors snapped a two game losing streak by defeating the first-place Rio Grande Valley Vipers by a score of 127-115 at the NBA D-League Showcase presented by Samsung Galaxy. The win marks the first showcase victory for Santa Cruz since their inception into the league last season.

Both teams brought a lot of offense with them to Reno as the game featured five of the top-12 scorers in the NBA D-League in Seth Curry, Cameron Jones for Santa Cruz and Troy Daniels, Robert Covington and Christapher Johnson for Rio Grande Valley. All five players scored in double-figures in today's contest.

Curry led the way for Santa Cruz with 27 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Daniel Nwaelele recorded 19 points and six rebounds. He connected on 5-of-8 attempts from behind the arc to counter the Vipers high-octane offense.

Santa Cruz shot .611 from the floor in the first quarter and opened up the second frame with a 16-4 run. They carried a 68-57 lead with them into the locker room.

Santa Cruz extended their lead to as many as 18 at 91-73 with 5:33 to play in the third quarter. Rio Grande Valley put together a strong finish to the stanza and cut the Santa Cruz lead to seven at 98-91 entering the fourth quarter, courtesy of a 10-2 run.

In the fourth quarter the Vipers would not get any closer as Santa Cruz had an answer every time Rio Grande Valley would get close. Kevin Parrom scored all 18 of his points in the second-half to help keep the Warriors' lead intact.

Daniels led Rio Grande Valley with a game-high 31 points, 24 of those points came via the 3-pointer. He nailed 8-of-21 attempts from beyond the arc.

Santa Cruz will return home tomorrow to play host to the Maine Red Claws at 10 P.M. EST. Rio Grande Valley Vipers will travel to take on the Texas Legends at 8 P.M. EST on Saturday.
