Atlanta Gladiators News Release

DULUTH, Ga. - The Greenville Road Warriors scored three early goals in the first period, which proved to be all they needed Sunday night to trump the Gladiators, 3-2, at the Ice Forum in Duluth. Joel Hanley and Garry Nunn scored goals for the Gladiators, who fell short in their comeback bid.

The Road Warriors (1-1-0-0) came out strong in the first period, forcing the Gladiators (0-2-0-0) to play in their defensive end for the majority of the period. Greenville opened things early when Lindsay Sparks scored off an assist from Brandon Hynes only two minutes in. This was almost immediately followed by goal from Greenville's Michael St. Croix at 5:33. The Road Warriors' third and final goal of the period came unassisted off Cameron with just under thirteen minutes remaining. Hanley stayed persistent around Road Warriors goaltender Jeff Malcolm, and was finally rewarded at 10:42 with the first Gwinnett goal of the game, unassisted.

That would remain the score of the first period, but the last five minutes wouldprove to deliver some excitement for the fans as a full ice brawl ensued, involving every player on the ice. Gloves and sticks scattered the ice, with surprisingly only one Gladiator receiving penalty, but Greenville was unable to produce on the power play. A total of 72 penalty minutes were doled out to both sides, but neither side was able to cash in on the man advantage all night (Gwinnett: 0-for-6, Greenville: 0-for-7).

The second period was more of the same, with Greenville controlling play for the beginning of the period. The Gladiators began to push back in the latter half of the frame, though, as Garry Nunn brought the deficit to one with his unassisted tally with under two minutes remaining. The Warriors outshot theGladiators in the second, 15-11.

The Gladiators failed to gain any ground in the third, and the score remained 3-2 in favor of the visitors until the final buzzer. The game did not have its shortage of penalties, with 22 in all, both squads drawing their fair share. Greenville outshot Gwinnett over the full 60 minutes, 31-to-28. Malcolm stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced, while Gladiators goaltender Mark Guggenberger was 28-for-31.

With the team's 11th season in the books, the Gladiators are set to return for their 2014-15 campaign at the Arena at Gwinnett Center with the team's Home Opener set for October 24th at 7:35 p.m. against the Wheeling Nailers.
